This past week has been the biggest week of donor giving so far! With a combined total of 1,500 pounds of fruits, vegetables and baked goods between June 30th and July 3rd, that puts Fresh Food Weekly up to 2,700 pounds of donated fresh food between June 3 and July 3, 2021. This amount of growth in the first 30 days is remarkable and completely unexpected. It really goes to show how much the people in our community really do care about food security in the City of Barrie - and it’s surrounding areas.
Cookstown Greens was Fresh Food Weekly’s first weekly donor and continues to donate their 100 percent certified organic produce. They donate a variety of produce including mixed greens, arugula, multi-coloured carrots, beets and black round radishes.
Simcoe Harvest also continues to donate each week and this past week, they rolled out an unbelievable amount of various fruits, vegetables and bread - absolutely unbelievable!
I also went back to Fresh Veggies at 60 Aileen in the Holland Marsh and harvested another massive amount of green and red leaf lettuces, which were really helpful in filling up the shelves at the Barrie Community Fridge!
Also this week, Chill Out Rentals donated a brand new ‘deep freeze’ freezer to Fresh Food Weekly, which now gives us the capacity to store frozen food items.
On Saturday, we brought two large coolers to the Barrie Farmers’ Market- which were both filled to the max, and we also started having bins out at the Orillia Fairgrounds Farmer’ Market, and they too filled up two big bins of food items that some of the vendors weren’t able to sell that day.
And we also got a new weekly food donor with Continental Specialties & Imports, a beautiful Dutch food store located down Barrie who also donated some sliced sandwich meats as well. I want to give a special thanks to all the vendors at both the Barrie and Orillia Farmers Markets for their amazing support in giving to Fresh Food Weekly: Highland Farms, Feast from the East, Harris Family Farm, T&R Jones Family Farm, Greystone Farm, Behr Farms, Heena’s Curry House, Wye View Farms, Maisine Cookie Co., Jillian Jigg’s Baking, and Two Crazy Acres!
Thank you to everyone who has supported this food charity so far! Without you, none of this would be possible. It has been such a pleasure to work with you all and get this delicious food to families in our community who really need it. You are a blessing and a shining light in our city. Thank you!
